What's the Big Deal About a Rug Pad?

My www.rugdots.com Home Page tells you all about Rug Dots and why they are such a good choice. But I also wanted to share with you the real scoop on rug pads as told from Jim Wood, who is a seasoned expert in the industry. I had the opportunity to interview Jim for this article and debunk some of the myths for needing a rug pad and get to root of why you need one.

Nancy: Jim, some people don’t think a rug pad is needed while others think rug pads are a necessity, but often for the wrong reasons. You’ve got some very strong opinions on this. Can you explain?

Jim: Producers of Rug Pads have for a long time now been jamming many different constructions of rug pad to the consumer. They do this to create more sellable SKU's which only adds confusion to the retailer as well as the end user. With the exception of a very expensive Handmade, the ONLY PURPOSE for a rug pad is to stop slippage and keep the rug from sliding.

Nancy: But in most every rug pad advertisement they claim the pad will help the rug to last longer.

Jim: Many retailers will sell a very thick pad when a customer buys an expensive hand made rug; the reason given is that it will allow the rug to wear better. The truth is that most expensive hand made rugs do not get a lot of traffic. The pad really doesn't add to the life of the rug and it really is a ploy to extract more dollars from the customer that obviously has more expendable income.

Nancy: What about less expensive rugs in high traffic areas?

Jim: Well, those rugs could have less wear on the bottom if a rug pad is used to prevent it from sliding. But in a high traffic situation, what should you be more concerned about; the bottom of the rug or the top of the rug that is open for all to see? The top of the rug is what gets the wear from foot traffic and is exposed to spills and all kinds of things that will deteriorate the look and feel.

Nancy: So that brings us back to your point that a rug pad is needed for one simple thing… keep the rug from slipping.

Jim: Exactly! A rug that slides not only looks bad being out of alignment with your walls and furniture but it’s a real safety hazard. Rugs that wrinkle up create a real trip hazard. This simple idea is why I think so highly of Rug Dots. When I saw how Rug Dots work, it got me thinking about the real need for a rug pad.
