How Do I Choose Colors in a Rug?

Color is usually the first criteria in picking a rug and can establish the mood of your room. There is more to it than just matching a fabric color swatch…
You obviously need to choose a rug with colors that coordinate with your decor. While all the colors in the rug don't have to match the colors in the room, at least one color should coordinate. Taking swatches of wallpaper, paint or upholstery fabric with you when you shop can help you match your colors correctly but can sometimes be misleading. Typically, the lighting in the store is totally different from that of your home. If you are able, the ultimate test is to bring the rug to your home to ensure the colors in the rug together with the lighting, wall color, wallpaper, furniture and color accents in the room all flow together.
Things to remember when choosing your colors are that each shade sets a different tone and adds intensity to the space. An area rug can open up and brighten a space by using lighter shades. Darker shades close in a space creating a cozy and more intimate atmosphere to the room.
Color is going to make or break your overall design plan so don’t be afraid to use it to your advantage. Just follow a few simple rules always using your instinct (your first instinct is usually your best) and don’t be afraid to make a statement. Consider using some bolder colors and colors with more depth. This will make a bigger statement when people enter the room leaving a lasting impression.
